In 2006 I finished my engineering degree in Automation at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Politehnica). My diploma thesis was a system for monitoring and controlling car fleets with bidirectional communication: a way to track every vehicle in a fleet in real time over the mobile network, and to dispatch work back to the driver over that same channel. My thesis advisor was Assoc. Prof. Eng. Daniel Moga, PhD.

The system had two halves. In each vehicle sat a piece of mobile equipment, a Windows CE PDA with a GPS receiver and a GPRS modem, that reported its position to a command and control center and displayed assignments to the driver. The control center collected positions from the whole fleet, decided which free vehicle was closest to a new job, and sent the assignment out for the driver to accept or decline. I built it end to end: the storage backend on Linux and MySQL, the operator interface on Windows, the communication server in between, and the software on the device itself.

Let me start with an apology. I cannot keep in touch with each of you individually, and I am sorry for that. It is not for lack of respect. Most of you are far smarter and better educated than I am, and I have no doubt I could learn a great deal from you. That makes the silence worse, not easier.

The plain problem is volume. The number of investors, funds, advisors, and intermediaries who reach out has grown past anything I can answer by hand. So I did what an engineer does and automated it. For a long time most of you received some version of this reply:

This page is a record of what I have been able to establish about my family, from surviving parish registers, Hungarian state civil registers, official gazettes and old newspapers.

On my father’s side the Uioreans of Feldioara Săcuiască run back five generations from my grandfather, to a couple married in the 1850s and to a man buried in 1813 whom I cannot attach to the rest. My grandmother’s family, the Sanislavs, turn out to be incomers from the next village, and there is a Sanislav woman in my direct line three generations before her. The Liteans and the Triteans come in on my great-grandmother’s side, and the Triteans are a direct line rather than a family that merely married in.
